National Rocketry Competition (NRC)
For the 2023-24 year, the following NRC events have been chosen:
|
These events are open to fly at every S.W.A.R.M. launch for all NAR members from August, 2023 to June 30, 2024.
If you aren't yet a member of the NAR, join now then sign up for a S.W.A.R.M. NRC Starter Set. |
Tips for NRC 2023-24
1/2A Helicopter Duration:
1/2A Helicopter Duration:
- There are two types of helicopter styles: internal blades and external blades.
- First-time fliers should buy a kit to get a feel for how helicopters work.
- The Estes Mini-A Heli, the Semroc Heli-Roctor (both external blades), and the Apogee Mini-Copter (internal blades) are recommended.
- Use a minimum diameter body tube (13 mm) for the main body section
- Motor choices are the A10-3T and the A3-4T. The longer delay on the A3 is the way to go.
- A wider body section can hold a larger parachute.
- Using a piston for launch is recommended.
- A 13 mm design is recommended.
- There are plans for several rocket gliders on the NAR website.
- Apogee sells the Cirrus Breeze rocket glider.
- A two-stage 13 mm rocket using an A10-0T/A3-4T combination is recommended.
- Thin Mylar or tracing paper make good streamers. Make accordion folds along its length (1 cm each).
- A longer, wider streamer is good but it must fit in the 13 mm body tube and slide out upon ejection. Powder can help with this.
- A standard NAR Payload must be used, so a longer payload section is needed.
- Due to its heavier weight, a payload rocket could use the B4 engine with a shorter delay.
- Getting an egg-carrying rocket of the launch pad using a B motor is almost impossible without a piston!
- Some modellers use just a balloon to hold an egg, although inserting the egg is tricky. Otherwise, padding inside a payload section is necessary.
- A short delay motor is a must because of the egg's weight. Either a B6-2 or a B4-2 are recommended.
All S.W.A.R.M. launches between the end of NARAM and July 1 will be sanctioned NRC launches. This means that NAR members may launch any or all of the 6 events and have their scores submitted to the National Scoreboard. At the end of each year (July 1), the top 10 competitors in each event will be eligible to compete at NARAM for the Event Specialist Awards or to become National Champion.
