Model Rocketry F.A.Q.
What is model rocketry?
Model rocketry is a hobby that was developed in the 1950's at the start of the space race. Model rockets always contain lightweight parts, commercially made engines, and recovery devices. The hobby is a great way to promote Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (S.T.E.M.). It can be a great learning experience or just a whole lot of fun!

Is it safe?
Yes! All model rockets are commercially manufactured; safe recovery devices (parachutes, streamers, etc.) are used on all model rockets; the Model Rocket Safety Code is always followed at club launches; and carefully designed electrical launch systems are used. The best way to learn about model rocketry is to attend one of S.W.A.R.M.'s monthly launches. All club members would be glad to show you their rockets and talk about all the safety features of model rocketry.

Are the rockets re-usable?
Yes! Model rockets are designed to be used over and over again. Small repairs are sometimes needed but rockets can be flown dozens of times (or more!). Occoassionally, a rocket drifts away from the launch site and is lost, but knowing the field and your rocket can definitely lower the chance of that happenning. Having some extra sets of eyes watch your model also helps. Definitely an advantage of launching with a club like S.W.A.R.M.

How much does it cost?
A single model rocket kit can be purchased for as little as $5-$20. Engines are usually about $4-$5 each. If you want to buy your own launch equipment, that might cost around $30, but why bother? S.W.A.R.M. has everything you need to get started. Just come to a launch.
