Contest #1: All the Basics
Your goal is to design one rocket using OpenRocket to fly in all of these events.
Entries:
Design Requirements:
Body Tubes
Quest: A6-4; B6-4; C6-3,5
Flight Conditions:
Disqualifications:
Event #1: B Impulse Streamer Duration
No landing speed restriction in effect.
Event #2: C Impulse Parachute Duration
Event #3: A Impulse Altitude
Altimeter must be used.
Event #4: Open Spot Landing
The spot will be placed 200’ downwind of the launch pad.
You must specify the launch rod angle (less than 30°) you wish to use for this launch.
Event #5: Drag Race
Lowest Flight: 1 point (minimum altitude of 150’)
Longest Duration: 1 point
First to Clear the Launch Rod: 1 point
We will be launching from a 36” rod so at least one 1” x ⅛” launch lug is necessary.
Altimeter must be used. You must specify the launch rod angle (less than 30°) you wish to use for this launch.
Points will be awarded according to finish rank in each event:
1st Place: 10 points
2nd Place: 7 points
3rd Place: 5 points
4th Place: 3 points
5th Place and lower: 1 point
DQ: 0 points
The designer with the most points after all 5 events is the SRS Contest #1 champion!
Entries:
- 1 OpenRocket (.ork) file (include all recovery devices in one plan)
- Engine choice, launch rod angle, and recovery device for each event
- Only 1 entry per S.W.A.R.M. member
- Name your rocket
- Entries must be received by February 4, 2017
- Contest will take place February 5-10, 2017
Design Requirements:
Body Tubes
- All body tubes must come from the OpenRocket database
- Body tubes must not be longer than their default lengths
- Sections must be joined by realistic couplers, bulkheads, or transitions (with realistic shoulders)
- There must be a minimum of 3 fins (tube fins are not allowed)
- Minimum thickness is 1/32” for balsa or 1/64” for phenolic, basswood, plywood, fibreglass
- Must be large enough to house the altimeter:
- Length 1.93”; Width 0.57”; Depth 0.71”; Mass: 10 grams
- Payload must stay attached to the rocket during flight and recovery
- Standard parachute/streamer materials available in OpenRocket must be used
- Maximum streamer size is 24” x 2”
- Maximum parachute size is 24”
- Only the following engines may be used:
Quest: A6-4; B6-4; C6-3,5
- You must choose your engine for each event
- Motor overhang must be 0.5 inches
- Clusters are acceptable but staging is not.
- Materials must be standard weights and thicknesses
- Rockets must have at least 1.0 caliber of stability when loaded with engines
Flight Conditions:
- 3’ rod
- 7.2 km/h wind (10% variation)
- 15C and 1013 mbar pressure
- Launching from Chatham, ON
Disqualifications:
- Landing speed higher than 20 feet/second (Not including Event #1.)
